Katie, you're absolutely right that there's a lot of label "slapping" going on out there. The danger, as many companies have found out, is that there's a difference between a product containing "no gluten ingredients" and a "gluten-free" product. Those with celiac and gluten intolerance know the difference and won't buy foods unless they're manufactured in a certified gluten-free facility. So those jumping in for a quick buck probably won't last.

To another point, there's a substantial difference between the gluten-free movement and "trend[s] like 'green' & 'natural.'" That difference is that gluten is a physiological issue. Most people don't consume "green" and "natural" out of medical necessity they way they do "gluten-free."

It's an infant market for gluten-free products. It's a growing market. It will change. Gluten-free producers will drop out of the race. Labeling standards will change. But it's definitely not, in my opinion, a trend.

While market advantages do exist for gluten-free products, especially by accommodating new audiences, the phrase is becoming a go-to trend like "green" & "natural." Companies with any type of food product--from fruit to bean dip--are slapping a "gluten-free" label on their packaging, and supermarkets are overrun by them. To me, it seems like companies are desperate to make sales, even though they're fading into a sea of similarity.

I've never been discriminating when it comes to beer. Movies, yes. Beer, No. But I do enjoy the rise in craft beers in St. Louis. We can all thank In-Bev for the local brewery rise in the past years.

This is just my opinion. You know, my two pints worth. yuck. Yuck.

With love,
Adam Hallas
